Negotiating Art, Memory and the Holocaust in Contemporary Poland

The National Holocaust centre is delighted to announce that Dr Roman Nieczyporowski of the Gdansk Academy of Fine Arts will be sharing his lecture 'Negotiating Art, Memory and the Holocaust in Contemporary Poland' at the centre on Sunday 26th January 2020 as part of his 2020 UK tour.

In Roman's capacity as a lecturer at the Gdansk Academy of Fine Arts, he specialises in 'The History and Theories of Contemporary Art and Culture'. Roman himself is of Swedish-Polish descent, and has spent time exploring his own views and experience of being one of less than 4,000 identifying Jewish people currently living in Poland. In his lecture he will examine the cultural legacy of living in the country which was forced to pay host to the Nazi concentration camps. He will discuss in depth how this legacy is negotiated in the Polish national psyche today through the establishment of memorials and he will survey art produced in its wake by major European artists such as Joseph Beuys, Maciej Świeszewski and Zoran Mušič.

This is Roman's first talk here at the centre, and we look forward to welcoming him,

The centre will be open from 10.00am - 4.00pm, with Roman's talk commencing at 1pm.
