Applications open for young creative talent fund

Local young people dreaming of a creative career may find that ambition a little easier to achieve thanks to a grant that’s just reopened for applications. The Palace Theatre Newark’s Our Past Your Future Fund was set up for the Theatre’s centenary in 2020 to give back to the community which has supported it over 100 years and to ensure its legacy of championing the arts in Newark continues in future generations.

16- to 25-year-olds who live in Newark and Sherwood can apply for a grant of £1500 towards course fees or living expenses when studying any creative arts subject. Last year’s lucky recipient Ella Lighten said: “It makes to so proud to have grown up in Newark, a town that supports the arts exponentially, because I wouldn't be the creative person I am today without its opportunities. I hope that one day I can give back to the town and inspire others to reach for their dreams in the arts the way I am.”

Applicants are asked to demonstrate their passion for the arts and plans for a future in the industry through a short application form. These will then be assessed and a selection of candidates will be invited for an interview with Theatre staff, a representative from Newark and Sherwood District Council and from Palace sponsors Tallents Solicitors.

Councillor Rowan Cozens, Deputy Leader of the District Council and Portfolio Holder for Heritage, Culture and the Arts, said: “The district has a strong history of Art and Cultural Heritage. Buildings like the Palace Theatre and the Arts and Crafts Building on the Lilley and Stone site are testament to the importance previous generations placed on practical arts subjects. Famous names from the area even achieved knighthoods for their craft, from artist Sir William Nicholson to the actor Sir Donald Wolfit.

“We have so many complex issues facing us today, we need creative thinkers and creative solutions from the sort of people this fund will support. Young people put so much hard work and dedication in to get to a high level of attainment in arts subjects, especially as these areas are often extra-curricular, so I am delighted that we are able to support them with this fund.”
