Red extreme heat warning issued

Met Office upgrades its previous warning to red

The Met Office have issued their first ever RED warning of extreme heat for parts of Central and Northern England including Newark and the surrounding area on Monday and Tuesday.

The warning which includes a risk to life comes into force at midnight on Monday morning.

The current forecast for Newark shows temperatures reaching 38 degrees

The Met Office give the following warning:

  • Population-wide adverse health effects experienced, not limited to those most vulnerable to extreme heat, leading to serious illness or danger to life. Government advice is that 999 services should be used in emergencies only; seek advice from 111 if you need non-emergency health advice.
  • Substantial changes in working practices and daily routines will be required
  • High risk of failure of heat-sensitive systems and equipment, potentially leading to localised loss of power and other essential services, such as water or mobile phone services
  • Significantly more people visiting coastal areas, lakes and rivers, leading to an increased risk of water safety incidents
  • Delays on roads and road closures, along with delays and cancellations to rail and air travel, with significant welfare issues for those who experience even moderate delays

Please drink regulalry, or sip water frequently to remain hydrated, check on neighbours and the elderly. Remember, look after yourself first then others. the risk of heatstroke, dehydration and worse is real.

Keep your home cool by closing windows and pulling blinds and curtains closed, use fans and air conditioning where available.

Air conditioning is more efficient with doors and windows closed, and in your car use the air recirculation button to keep the car cooler.
