Severn Trent roadworks bring significant changes to London Road

The next stage of the £60m water and waste improvement scheme in Newark will see a one-way system in operation for the next two months.

Beginning on Monday 18th February, the next phase of works will require new sewer pipes to be laid through the junction of London Road, Bowbridge Road and Sherwood Avenue.

Inevitably, significant changes to traffic flow on London Road will cause disruption to traffic at a very busy junction.

The works will commence with traffic flow being managed by the use of a one-way system on London Road between the junctions with Balderton Gate and Sherwood Avenue.

The one-way system will allow INBOUND traffic to continue on London Road whilst OUTBOUND traffic will be diverted onto Sherwood Avenue and Balderton Gate. In order to maintain traffic flow, a temporary mini-roundabout will be installed at the Sherwood Avenue / Balderton Gate junction.

Bowbridge Road will also be closed for the laying of new sewers. Initially this closure will be at the London Road junction but will move steadily up the road towards Sydney Terrace.

The diversion route for the Bowbridge Road closure and hospital access will be via Portland Street, Victoria Street and Boundary Road.

Additionally, Via East Midlands are also scheduled to carry out improvement works to the traffic signals at this junction during this time.

Severn Trent & Via East Midlands have been working together over the last few months, so that both parties can carry out their works simultaneously to minimise the impact on the Newark transport system.

During these works a closure will also be put in place on Earp Avenue. This is a safety measure, as it is feared many vehicles will use the adjoining estate to by-pass the traffic restrictions, causing danger to residents and school children.
