Whale’s Return Set to Make a Splash in Market Place

The whale is swimming back to Newark Market Place this summer! The Plastic Ocean Show, which takes place inside an 18-metre-long replica whale, is returning after its initial run in April sold out in under 12 hours. Taking place on Sunday 11 August, free tickets will allow bold explorers to step inside this fascinating creature to experience a beautiful, funny and interactive show highlighting the impact that plastic has on our environment

With the use of exquisite puppets, comedy and music, ticket holders will join theatre company Circo Rum Ba Ba and explore the tale of sea creatures and their battle to survive in an ocean full of rubbish.

Run in partnership between Newark and Sherwood District Council and Newark Town Council, the event will also coincide with the return of the Newark-on-Sea beach, set to bring seaside fun to our inland town from Wednesday 7 to Monday 19 August. The day of the show will also see an eco-friendly and sustainable market taking place with charity groups attending to promote their work and raise awareness.

Alongside the Newark-on-Sea and market event, it’s hoped that the event will encourage more visitors to the town who will make a day of it, enjoying the wonderful independent shops and eateries that Newark has to offer. The show also aligns with the District Council’s Motion for the Ocean which pledges to improve our waterways, recognises the crisis that our ocean is facing, and acknowledges that local government has an essential role to play in recovering its health.

Matt Lamb, Director of Planning and Growth at Newark and Sherwood District Council, said: “It was brilliant to see this event sell out so quickly back in April. To know that local people, especially young people, are interested in learning about these important subjects is really heartening. It’s always great to see our Market Place buzzing with excitement and activity and this is part of an ongoing ambition to host a range of events in the town. We are really delighted, in partnership with Newark Town Council, to be able to bring this show back alongside the amazing Newark-on-Sea beach this August. I wish you all good luck snapping up those tickets!

The show is suitable for ages 3 and over and to ensure that as many children as possible can enjoy it, those attending are kindly being asked to keep to one adult only per family. Tickets for the event are free but limited and will be released in three waves, at 10am on Monday 1, 15 and 29 July, at www.palacenewark.com/whats-on.
