Arthur & Ethan we’re fencing at Liverpool

We had a smaller contingent of fencers out and about this weekend. Arthur Eakin and Ethan Dakin were fencing in the first event of the new Liverpool Youth Series, which brought strong competitors from as far away as London.

Arthur was competing in as one of the younger fencers in U14. He won 3 out of 4 of the matches in his first poule (including beating the eventual gold medal winner) and won 2 out of 4 in his second poule.  He had a bye in L16 and faced J. Davis Dore from Salisbury in L8. They matched each other equally and it was 6-6 until 30 seconds before time. Arthur dropped a point and had to chase, losing a further point to finish 6-8 down in a very close match.

Ethan was fencing in U12. He won all the matches in his poules, bar the very last one, going into the DEs as 1st seed. He beat Alfred Lloyd of Salle Kiss 10-1 and then beat Gabriel Clayworth by the same score to go into the final. This was a tougher match, against Luca Businaro of ZFW. Ethan was 9-5 up and Businaro caught up, making it 9-9 with 3 seconds to go at the break. Ethan regrouped mentally, came back out strongly and got the winning point.

In other news, well done to Ross Barker, one of our newer members, for competing in the Yorkshire Senior Foil Championships on Saturday. And  well done to Ed Howlett who didn't drop a point in any of his foil matches for Kings London against the University of Surrey. He also held his own in a rare incursion into epee, as Kings won 131-102 to clinch the Southern 1A league title with a match to spare.
