Local sport for this weekend

Catch a match

Did you know that Newark has a national league winning team, in May of last year Newark Jaguars Wheelchair Basketball team “Jags1” won the Premiership National Finals, not bad for a club only formed in 1995. After a winter break they are back with a busy weekend, a home match against London Titans at the Magnus Sports Centre at 2.00pm on Saturday followed by a trip to Sheffield Steelers twenty-four hours later.

Time to go outdoors and for first time this year we can look forward to a sporting weekend without any interference from the weather.

The largest crowd of the weekend will be at the YMCA for the United Counties League match of the day between Newark Town and Grantham Town. The home side sit second in the table with forty-six points from twenty-five matches while the visitors are eight points behind them but crucially have four matches in hand, to put it simply it’s a match Newark cannot afford to lose.

Newark & Sherwood United play their first competitive match for twenty-eight days when they visit a Hucknall Town side that sit mid-table but have only won three of their twelve home matches this season. “The Highwaymen” sit just two points above the relegation zone and with the two sides below that line playing each other on Saturday they desperately need to live up to their nickname and pinch three points.

Southwell City are another side that has not played since mid-December, they return with a trip to the middle of Nottingham and a match-up with Radford. The lack of car parking and trams attacking from all angles always make this one of more interesting days out.

Finally for football, Collingham try for the third time to get their Station Road pitch passed fit for their Notts Senior Trophy match with Attenborough.

To rugby and a return to Kelham Road for the first time in 2026 for Newark when they host Melbourne in the Midlands Regional North. With just one victory to their name it could be a long afternoon for our locals but a large and noisy home crowd should spur them on.

It’s sixth against third at Bishops Drive as Southwell take on Spalding, The home side already have the scalp of the league leaders and like Newark they will be relying on a voracious home crowd to cheer them on.

its a early start for the Newark Hockey Ladies with a 10.30 start at Belper while the men can enjoy breakfast before their 1.00pm start at Burton on Trent.

Have we missed your team or sport, let us know and we can tell Newark all about it.
