Starting with football, Newark Town’s recent dip in form which saw one victory from their last five outings was put to the test with a tricky day out in Derbyshire, in front of a crowd of 345 “the Blues" proved up to the task with a clean sheet aided by a single Harry Allcock strike giving them a happy journey home from Gresley.

The result maintains their nine-point cushion in the fight for the play-offs.

At the other end of the UCL North table Newark & Sherwood United’s recent good form ended with a three-nil defeat at many people’s championship favourites Sherwood Colliery. The result, coupled with a good day for both Heanor and Ashby, puts “the highwaymen” right back in the relegation mix.

Southwell City had a day off from their Division One campaign and were last seen in their Christmas jumpers wondering around Nottingham.

Our local match in the Notts Senior League Premier Division saw third place Aslockton & Orston, who had only failed to score once in their last nineteen matches, host an F.C. Cavaliers team that had lost their previous fourteen league matches and shipped fifteen goals in their last three outings. You know what is coming next, a single goal victory to the visitors. That is why we love football so much, unless you come from Aslockton.

On to rugby. Newark are having a poor season, rock bottom and winless after eleven rounds of the Regional 2 Midlands North Division. Many of their matches have been close and hinged of late tries but that cannot be said of the weekend’s trip to league leaders Dronfield. A 61-0 defeat means it turned out to be an instantly forgettable Saturday.

In the Counties 1 Midlands North Division mid table Southwell entertained leaders University of Nottingham at their Park Lane ground, and the large pre-Christmas crowd enjoying a 13-13 draw.
