Mixed weekend for Amelia

Amelia Chrispin on the National stage

On Saturday Amelia Chrispin took part in the National IRC’s Triathlon Festival. She was representing Yorkshire in the Tristar 3 age group (13/14-year-old) at the bottom end of the group. She lined up in the balmy 14.5-degree lake with 38 other eager athletes from all over the UK.

She had a great swim and left T1 in great 13th position, but was nearly knocked off her bike as she was mounting when another girl accidentally rammed her from behind.

Amelia looked a little laboured on the bike losing 6 places before leaving for the 2.4km run looking very tired. Uncharacteristically, 7 other athletes passed her on the run and she crossed the line looking exhausted, in a credible 26th place (6th place 13-year-old).

Amelia said after the race the cycling seemed very difficult and this drained her of all her energy for the run. This mystery was explained when Amelia retrieved her bike from transition, her collision in T1, at the start of the bike leg, had pushed one of her brake pads onto the rim, restricting her for the whole race!

Amelia put the previous days bad luck behind on Sunday and concentrated on her relay race. This was a boy/girl/boy/girl format and there were two races with 26 teams in each. The race was to be a swim, followed by one lap of the bike and one run lap, then tag the next racer.

The racing was fast and exciting and Amelia’s team tried hard but were not in the running for the medals. This aside she was happy to finish the weekend on a high, by having a fantastic relay leg making up places and out of the 52 teams having the 5th fastest female run of the day.

A great weekend of racing to end the Triathlon season.
