Gary Edginton moves on
Cricket season may seem a long way, but the various leagues will already but setting up the fixtures and for the first time in twenty-two years the South Notts Cricket League will have to manage without their legionary results co-ordinator and media officer. Now living in Devon Gary Edginton has recently been elected as the Chairman of Uplyme & Lyme Regis Cricket Club.
Radio Newark caught up with and asked him to talk about his career.
“My playing career was very mediocre playing above my level for both Awsworth CC & Stanton Elks, I was proving more valuable in administrative roles where I rose to be Chairman of both clubs which involved them merging. Joining both the SNCL & DCCCL managements committees in 2003 as the club moved across the border the following year. In both leagues i did result inputting and checking. In 2007 I became League Registrar which involved the progression from written submissions to electronically thus streamlining and quickening up the process for everyone, a massive step forward. It also fell to me to champion the introduction of “Play Cricket” into the league. 2010 saw me add the role of Umpires Secretary to my list which involved organising panel umpires for the top three divisions and aiding the NPL in umpire development.
2014 saw our move to Devon which meant we needed to find replacements for both roles to which Craig James & Paul Massey succeeded me. Phil Johnson retired from being our results Secretary so I convinced the committee I could do the role 200 miles away and set up the Facebook group to let clubs enter the results or a few would email in the first five seasons i also did a report for the local newspapers. In 2022 I joined Uplyme & Lyme Regis CC as an umpire and at our AGM recently I wasV asked to become Chairman in the clubs 140th anniversary year. The individual comments that have come my way from players and members on the Notts cricket scene have meant the world to me and will be forever treasured.”
Happy retirement Gary, it’s been a pleasure to work will you. Enjoy those long hot Devon summers watching “your club” and remember it’s JAM FIRST.
