Thriller at the YMCA

Local football round up

Newark Town came back from three-one down to secure a point and dent Grantham Town’s hope of an immediate return to step four. Two-nil down with less than twenty-five minutes on the clock “the blues” had it all to do. Tristen Drummond reduced the arrears after the break only for “the gingerbreads” to restore their two goal lead with twenty minutes left. If they thought that would be enough they were sadly mistaken as Town roared on by the majority of the 412 inside the YMCA the fight back commenced. Alex Hales pulled one back in the 77th minute before a “couldn’t write it moment”. In the ninth minute of added time  “the gingerbreads” player manager Mitch Griffiths conceded a penalty, up stepped Louis Czerwak and the coolest man in the stadium slotted the ball home to rescue a point. Griffiths of course left Newark for Grantham last summer. Please credit Craig Robertson for the video.

At the other end of the table Ashby Ivanhoe produced their best display of the season to move out of the relegation places, replaced by Newark & Sherwood who went down two-nil in a lackluster display at Hucknall. “ the Highwaymen” hadn’t kicked a ball in anger for twenty-eight” days and it showed with the home keeper not being seriously tested in a long afternoon.

A single Steven Woodhouse goal midway through the second half ensured three points for Southwell City in their first match of 2026. Radford away is never an easy day out and “the Minstermen” will be more than pleased with a clean sheet and the three point's.

After two postponements Collingham had to concede home advantage in their Notts Senior Trophy match against Attenborough, it didn’t seem to bother the villagers as they raced into a two goal lead and a place in the quarter-final of the county competition.

Elsewhere, Retford United overtook their near neighbours in the UCL Division One title race, both clubs are locked on 66 points by FC have two matches in hand.

Immingham and Nettleham are separated by four points in Lincs League title race, the Lincoln club have two matches in hand as both clubs fight for one dream ticket to the pyramid.

Cotgrave have a massive fifteen point lead in the Notts Senior Trophy League, Aslockton and Orston are second after coming out on top of a seven goal thriller against Wollaton.
