Weekend review

The round-up

It's been a busy week for Newark Athletic Clubs Ed Buck, first off he represented England at the Elgoibar X-Country event in Spain coming home 12th overall. Seven days later it was on to Belgium for EnergyVision CrossCup de Hannut.

Newark AC had a brilliant day at the Midlands Cross-Country with the senior men successfully defending their title (see headline photo) and Olivia Mathias gaining a silver in the ladies race with the team finishing fourth overall.

Newark Hockey Men made it back-to-back wins to start 2026, they ply their trade in Division Six North-East of the Midlands Hockey League and currently sit 9th out of 12, only two points behind a Mansfield side who they beat 4-1 on Saturday. After going behind in the fourth minute goals from Lewis Parrett, Daniel Hendrie, Scott Robinson, and Jayden Timmermans turned the match around for Newark's best win of the campaign.

Not such a good day for the ladies, after having to be at Matlock for a 10.00am start they conceded to early goals in a 2-0 defeat.

On to football, two points separate the bottom five clubs in the United Counties North Division and Newark & Sherwood United are in the thick of it, their point gained in a goalless draw at Gresley keeping them off the bottom on goal difference. In a match played on a mudheap of a pitch despite the groundsman's gallant efforts saw neither keeper brought into serious action. But, at the end of the season the single point earned could prove vital.

Newark Town despatched a Skegness side with ease at the YMCA and are looking certainties for at least a play-off place, the home goals coming from Luke Anderson, Louis Czerwak 2, and Sam Wright in a four-one victory.

Southwell City lost by the odd goal in three at Brinkley against high-flying Stapleford Town, the home goal coming from Akand Gangotra. "The Minstermen" sit comfortably in mid-table of the UCL Division One.

The goals were flying in at Station Road, but unfortunately for Collingham most of them were in the home sides net with visitors Aslockton & Orston coming out on top under the Friday night lights.

Finally, Newark Jaguars Wheelchair Basketball team lost by 80 to 61 in their local derby against Sheffield Steelers.
