Grassroots Plus Podcast
The game. The people. The stories.
Grassroots Plus is an award-nominated podcast celebrating non-league football across the East Midlands and beyond. Based in Newark and born during the Covid years, the show has grown into a library of more than 200 episodes.
Mick Bradley and Dave Pickerill meet the people behind the clubs, exploring their stories, ambitions and the challenges that make every club different. While its roots are local, the conversation has reached Scotland, Ireland, Spain and Germany, including two episodes featuring Newark’s twin town, Emmendingen.

Behind the microphones
Meet the team
Created by Mick Bradley and Dave Pickerill, both familiar voices from Radio Newark Sport, Grassroots Plus now also draws on the research and remote production support of Andy Porter.
Mick Bradley
Known on the show as “the voice of reason”, unless someone mentions referees, Mick brings a lifetime of experience in local football administration and a familiar voice to Radio Newark listeners.
His non-league loyalties lie in deepest Cornwall with Lizard Argyle. These days, his Saturday afternoons often involve a different-shaped ball, watching his grandson play rugby for City of Stoke-on-Trent.
Dave Pickerill
Dave is the show’s “posh cockney”, with a love of the New Forest and his favourite club, Bashley. A passionate collector of football programmes, his collection numbered more than 5,000 at the last count.
Following a lengthy spell with the Newark & Sherwood United media team, Dave is now the man behind the microphone at Southwell City.
Andy Porter
Known as “Cornish Andy”, Andy supports the show with research and remote production. He is an avid St Blazey supporter and a county-level referee observer, a combination that inevitably puts him on a collision course with Mick.
Away from football, Andy received the RAF Association’s Sir Thomas Pike award as its highest individual fundraiser following his 2025 walk from Lizard Point to Plymouth.
