Community Project Takes Off At Magnus Academy

The team worked hard in high temperatures to get the poly tunnel up

The local school is creating an allotment style garden to grow produce for elderly and vulnerable members of the community.

The Magnus is hoping to build greater ties to the local community and grow seasonal produce as part of the project, giving students an opportunity to give back as well as the chance to learn outside of a classroom environment.  All of the plants for the project have been donated by The Eaton Avenue Growers Association, who also attended earlier this week to put up a 30 foot poly tunnel, sponsored by the Southwell and Nottingham Multi Academy Trust.

Michelle Cameron from the Magnus Academy said how grateful they are to all who helped so far, "The crew from the Eton Avenue Growers Association were amazing and worked like soldiers to get the tunnel completed."

The volunteers were kindly supplied lunch by the Turquoise Teapot, and other local businesses have been keen to help with the project, with Homebase donating garden tools such as forks, watering cans, trowels and manager Dave Billington has also promised ongoing support for the project.

The school is hoping to get sponsorship from other local businesses, please contact Mrs Cameron at The Magnus Academy on 01636 680066 ext 3202 for more information.

Wilkinsons also donated a £5 gift voucher to the project, and the school is has asked for donations of gardening tools for the project, please contact Mrs Cameron on the contact details above to arrange collection or delivery of any donated/loaned equipment.  Any surplus donated tools will be given to a Christian charity that provides tools to third world countries to help them support themselves.  The Magnus also needs wooden pallets to provide raised beds and planting tables in the poly tunnel.

Mrs Cameron expressed how pleased she was at the progress of the project, "This is starting to become the community project that we envisaged."

Radio Newark will be following the progress of the gardens at The Magnus Academy, keep an eye on our website and social media for further updates.
