Criminal Behaviour Order for prolific shop thief

A prolific shoplifter been jailed for 28 weeks and banned from entering shops in Newark.

Terri Styring (26), of no fixed address, has been banned from entering any retail premises in Newark Town Centre apart from Inmaan Pharmacy on Eton Avenue and Aldi on North Gate. She is also banned from entering Northgate Retail Park, the Sainsbury’s store in Balderton and the Co-op Store on Bowbridge Road.

Styring has also been banned from carrying a hypodermic needle in public in Newark unless for medical purposes after her co-accused, Michael Lowe (30), previously threatened shop staff with a needle when the pair were challenged for attempting to steal from local shops.

Michael Lowe appeared at Nottingham Magistrates Court on February 22 and was found guilty of multiple shop thefts in February and breaching a suspended sentence for previous shop thefts, when he appeared at Nottingham Magistrates' Court on February 22. He has been jailed for 20 weeks and banned from the same retail premises as Styring.

Nottinghamshire Police and Newark and Sherwood District Council successfully applied for a Criminal Behaviour Order (CBO) against Styring to bring an end to her criminal behaviour in and around Newark. A key focus of the district council’s Cleaner, Safer and Greener campaign is to ensure effective enforcement to help protect the public.

Inspector Heather Sutton, Neighbourhood Inspector for Newark, said: “Styring, and co-accused, Michael Lowe, are habitual criminals and their constant joint offending has had a huge impact on the local businesses and their employees in Newark. A Criminal Behaviour Order focuses on more serious offenders who engage in criminal activity, as well as anti-social behaviour and as a partnership we are committed to taking a hard stance on those who persistently steal. This order will significantly reduce the risk of her reoffending and thus benefit the stores and the community.”

District council deputy leader Keith Girling said: “Making communities safer is a key part of the district council’s Cleaner, Safer and Greener campaign and the partnership working involved in successfully bringing about this application to Court is significant and provides the businesses and wider community reassurance that people who show blatant disregard for the law and their behaviour impacts on others will be tackled.”
