Join the District Council’s Garden Recycling Scheme for a greener district

Did you know you can recycle your garden waste with Newark and Sherwood District Council’s garden recycling scheme?

Households in Newark and Sherwood are once again invited join or renew their membership of the District Council’s garden recycling service and help create a greener district!

For £35 for the year, you get a brown bin and an all-year-round collection service which occurs every two weeks between March and November, and monthly from December to February. If you need to order an additional bin you can do so for £35 each.

Your brown bin can be used to dispose of:

  • grass cuttings
  • hedge trimmings
  • leaves
  • small branches and twigs (up to 10cm in diameter)
  • plants and weeds
  • cut flowers
  • chopped up Christmas trees in January

By recycling your garden waste, you are helping to divert the waste from landfill, and it is recycled into compost that helps plants and vegetation grow, meaning fewer greenhouse gases are released into the atmosphere.

Councillor Roger Jackson, Portfolio Holder for Cleaner, Safer, Greener at Newark and Sherwood District Council, said: “Our garden recycling service is a great example of how our cleaner, safer, greener schemes can benefit both residents and our planet. It allows us to meet our recycling ambitions, saves residents the trouble of driving to a recycling centre, and helps the planet by reducing greenhouse gases emitted.”

“We already have 17,000 people signed up to the service and we have collected 5000 tonnes of garden waste. I know many of our residents will be enjoying getting back out into their gardens more frequently as the warmer months approach, and I encourage everyone to sign up to the scheme.”

Renewal letters and emails to existing customers are being sent out, inviting residents to continue their participation in the scheme. Once customers have renewed, they will receive a letter with the new sticker.

The service runs from April 1 until March 31. Upon receipt of payment customers will be given a sticker to place on their bin. Only bins with stickers on will be collected.

Please be aware that collection days for around half of our customers will be changing in April 2023. Please check again from April 1st to confirm your garden waste collection days for 2023/2024.
