Murder Investigation Launched In Newark

A 22 year old has been arrested.

Nottinghamshire Police have launched a murder investigation after a man was fatally injured.

Officers were called at 11.53pm last night (30 April) after a man was found collapsed in Castle Gate, Newark.

Despite the best efforts of emergency services, the man died at the scene.

A 22-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of murder and remains in police custody.

A scene remains in place while investigations continue. Castle Gate, Stodman Street and Middle Gate are closed and drivers are asked to find alternative routes.

Detective Chief Inspector Jennifer Lovatt, who is overseeing the investigation, said: “What happened in Newark overnight is tragic and has resulted in the death of a man.

“His family have been informed and our thoughts are with them at this extremely difficult time.

“Our officers were at the scene quickly and, following inquiries, a suspect was detained shortly after 4am. He remains in police custody.

“A team of detectives are working at pace to progress this investigation and we are urging anyone who saw what happened or anyone who may have recorded CCTV, dash-cam or mobile phone footage which could help us with our investigation to please get in touch.

“We understand this incident is likely to cause concern locally, but we would like to provide reassurance that we are not seeking anyone else in connection with the incident at this time.

“Officers will be carrying out additional patrols in the area and residents can expect to see an increased police presence in the area while our inquiries continue.”
