Newark girl Braves The Shave in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support

14 year old Grace hopes to one day be a hairdresser, and shares her new hairstyle feels weird, but she can’t stop stroking it!

14 year old Grace Spencer has braved the shave today, saying goodbye to her luscious locks and raising £400 for Macmillan Cancer Support.

Grace decided to shave her hair after watching her young cousin suffer through Leukaemia, cancer of the body's blood-forming tissues, before she thankfully went into remission. Her grandfather also suffered with prostate cancer, which has left him prone to infections.

The shave took place at T.K Hair and Beauty Studio, where Grace has worked as a Saturday girl for two years. She said: “I think the salon have been the most supportive, they’ve helped me raise the money and have been more nervous than me!”

Grace claims she was inspired to ‘brave the shave’ after her sister chopped her hair into a bob to support the Little Princess Trust, a charity that makes free wigs for children and young people with cancer. She shares: “My sister had her hair cut and I thought, you know what? I have to win at everything, so I’m going to take it one step further!

People with cancer can’t pick to just cut their hair into a bob, they have to go bald.”

It was this empathetic mindset that pushed Grace to say goodbye to her long hair, with hopes her fundraising will help make a difference in somebody’s cancer journey.

Grace’s Dad, Jeff, said: It’s a small sacrifice for what some people go through, she just wanted to do her little bit.

I’m very, very proud of her. She’s a great girl.”

Currently, Grace has raised an amazing £400 of her £500 target and is still taking donations through her fundraising page.  You can donate to support Grace in her mission to help Macmillan Cancer Support at -https://bravetheshave.macmillan.org.uk/shavers/grace-spencer
