NSDC plans first Cleaner, Safer & Greener Day of Action

A Day of Action involving a major clear up of two residential areas as part of Newark and Sherwood District Council’s Cleaner, Safer & Greener campaign will take place on Thursday 30th August.

Yorke Drive and Winthorpe Road in Newark will be the focus of an intensive, day-long programme of works to tackle issues such as litter, dog fouling and fly-tipping.

Joining the council’s waste management teams in the mission will be district council staff volunteers, including Chief Executive John Robinson, as part of a new volunteering policy initiative which enables employees to devote a day of their time a year to voluntary and community projects.

It is the first of three specific days focusing on different areas of the district and is a key part of the district council-led campaign, Making Newark and Sherwood Cleaner, Safer & Greener – a place we are all proud of.

Residents of both areas will have a central role to play in the day’s activities and are being invited to help join in community litter picks which will run alongside the council’s deep cleaning operations.

The overall aim is to coordinate the council’s resources and those of its partners and the community to tackle issues, building on the sense of pride and well-being in the community and the desire to maintain a clean environment.

Among the actions scheduled for the day are:

·         A ‘deep cleanse’ of the Yorke Drive and Winthorpe Road  areas with intensive street sweeping, litter picking and clearing of any fly-tipping

·         Community litter picks at the back of Brunel Drive, Strawberry Hall Lane, including behind the Bridge Community Centre area

·         Work to clear and tidy parks and open spaces in the area

·         The installation of replacement litter bins where necessary new ones where needed and appropriate

·         A check on anti-social behaviour issues by community safety officers

·         Advice on responsible dog ownership, stray dogs and dog fouling, particularly in the Winthorpe Road area

·         Enforcement of any planning or parking issues

·         Advice to shops on food safety and licensing.

To enable work to be carried out thoroughly, in some areas motorists will be asked to park their cars at an alternative location so road sweeping work can be carried out.

Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue will be carrying out home safety checks and providing fire safety advice. The council is inviting a number of other partners including Nottinghamshire County Council, Nottinghamshire Police, Newark and Sherwood Homes and local businesses in the area to take part.

Bridge ward district councillors Gill Dawn and Irene Brown will also be joined by local residents and the council’s team of volunteers, to take part in a community litter-pick.

Councillor Dawn said: “The Cleaner, Safer & Greener campaign is a wonderful initiative and the Day of Action a really positive opportunity for residents to become involved, help make a difference and to see close up the work that the council is doing.

“I am really looking forward to the Day of Action where we can all help make those improvements which will show the wider public what the Cleaner Safer Greener campaign is all about.”

Councillor Brown said: “I am very much looking forward to the day and that something positive will come out of it.”

Anyone who is able to offer support or who wants to become involved in the community litter-pick should email customerservices@nsdc.info or telephone  01636 650000.
