Safety improvements for London Road, Newark to begin in September

A number of trees will be removed from along London Road, Newark by Nottinghamshire County Council. The work is scheduled to start before the end of September.

As the work takes place, care will be taken to allow road users to travel without disruption.

Councillor John Cottee, Committee Chairman for Communities and Place explains,

"Decisions to remove trees are not taken lightly. Trees are usually taken down when they can’t be pollarded and cutting them down is the best way to reduce the risk of harm and keep motorists and pedestrians safe.

"The trees in question need to be removed because they are in a poor condition, showing severe signs of decay at the base of the tree or within the trunk cavity area. In one case, the tree is not stable when pushed by hand, as the roots are no longer holding the tree in place.

"None of the trees are in a conservation area, but once budget becomes available, our desire is to plant some new trees to replace the ones that are being removed.”
