Amelia keeps up the pressure

Another cross country success for our young star

On Sunday, Worksop Harriers hosted the 4th round in the Notts Mini League at Worksop College. When we arrived many people were looking rather festive and Santa had even taken time out of his busy schedule and was helping set up the course! Amelia was representing Newark AC in her first year of the U13G category and had to a 2km, 2 lap course ahead of her.

As the gun went off for the start of the race all thoughts of Santa went out of the window as just over 30 girls vied for position, sprinting towards the first corner. The race pace started to settle and we could see the athletes stringing out on the back part of the course.

They field passed the start line for the start of the second lap and Amelia was running comfortably with a group of 3 other runners in 6th.

With half a lap to go Amelia started to increase the pace and managed to break away from the group she was with and very shortly afterwards she also passed the girl in 2nd place. With around 400m to go the top 7 runners all increased their speed pushing for position and the finish line.

Amelia was still gaining on the first place girl but could not quite catch her before the finish line. A great 2nd place which leaves her = 1st place in the league with 2 other athletes. The last race of the series will be at the end of February and promises to be a tight decider with 5 girls all still in contention for the top 3 positions.
