Blues back to their best

Newark Town

After a couple of (for this season) below par performances, the Blues returned to form to complete the double over fourth placed Renishaw, who to their credit fought hard for the full 90 minutes.

Richard Lane reports from the Sports Village

Ed Munton started for the first time this season and there was a place on the bench for 16 year old Josh Burkitt.

An even opening saw Daryl Price weave his way through the defence to see his shot saved by Moore while at the other end Nathan Burrows was forced to push away a drive from Edridge. Town looked the more lively in the early exchanges, Jonny Wiles and Tyler Martin shooting wide of the target before George Asplin saw his effort  from outside the area crash against the angle of bar and post. Luke Parsons was next to miss the target, lashing the ball way over the bar from ten yards out. It finally came right on 28 minutes, Price’s pinpoint corner met by Lewis Chambers’ glancing header to give Town the lead. Six minutes later the lead was doubled as Asplin’s cross from the right fell found Daryl Price who twisted and turned to find space before firing past Moore from close range. Town were looking dangerous every time they went forward while their defence was coping capably with whatever the visitors threw at them, Luke Boddy in particular getting through a lot of work with Jonny Wiles and Rhys Lewis combining well in midfield.

Price was again in action at the start of the second half, outpacing the covering defender but shooting too close to the keeper. Tyler Martin then produced a strong run down the middle but saw his shot deflected wide. Renishaw were still well in the game but their forward runs lacked an end product. The Blues extended their lead on the hour as Martin laid the ball off to Chambers whose accurate finish was placed out of the keeper’s reach. Three minutes later it really should have been four as Price broke clear but was fouled by Moore as he attempted to round him. Keeping his feet, he managed to find Asplin who somehow screwed the ball wide of the post from a couple of yards out. In the next attack, however, the fourth goal arrived, Chambers the provider this time, his low cross guided into the net by a stooping header from Lewis. With 67 minutes on the clock Renishaw pulled a goal back as indecision in the Town defence Ryan the opportunity to beat Burrows. Despite this, Town remained very much in control and had further opportunities to extend the lead, both Asplin and sub Kieran Job seeing good chances go astray. Asplin finally got his name on the scoresheet in the 90th minute, showing great control to set up the chance from a tight angle which caught the keeper on its way into the net.

This was good preparation for next Saturday’s game at Retford United who Town meet for the fourth time this season, the three previous matches having finished all square. Retford are currently on an eight match winning run, so this will be a tough test.

The abandoned Notts Senior Cup tie with Kimberley Miners Welfare will now take place on Wednesday February 12th  (7.30pm)
