Running for Australia

Newark Striders, Notfast, Newark AC

A beautiful if icy Sunday morning saw thirty runners from Newark Striders, Notfast and the wider Newark running community running in aid of the Bush Fire relief in Australia.

Striders chair Jacqui Jackson planned a testing route of 21KM with shorter options for those not wishing to run a half marathon. That said, it's the marathon training season, so some elected to incorporate the route into even longer distances.

In a testament to the phrase "Heroes don't always wear capes" wonder runner turned pig-whisperer, Phillipa Clarke once again saved the day. When some enthusiastic pigs tried to join in with the runners along the way, Phillipa stopped the traffic and ushered the cheeky porkers back home.

Rewind to Saturday morning and the Newark Parkrun participants were solidly behind the effort too, showing support by wearing Australian colours, raising money and there was a cork hat or two to be seen in the crowd. One Newark Strider even ran Campbelltown Parkrun near Sydney, though it's fair to say that was coincidental.

The events of the weekend were organised as part of an Australian Red Cross initiative by Striders' own Tom Stimson, who has close family in Australia, as well as a friend who has been greatly personally affected. Runners from all clubs, parkrunners and juniors have raised around £300 so far.

Well done to everyone who ran or supported.
