Flowserve sunk

It’s all about being Streetwise

NEWARK FLOWSERVE suffered their second home defeat of the season as they went down 2-0 to a streetwise Romulus who thoroughly deserved their success in the Midland Football League Premier Division.

The top five clash was keenly contested but Flowserve lacked a spark, even in the last ten minutes of the match when the visitors were reduced to ten men after the first sin-binning of the season at Lowfields.

The hosts could have no complaints when Romulus took the lead after 13 minutes, and when they added their second on the hour mark it was a just reward for their endeavours.

Ben Hutchinson had the ball in the net in the early exchanges, only to be denied by the linesman’s flag, and then Romulus’s leading light Simeon Colbourne broke away and hit the post with a cross-shot only for the same fate to befall him.

Flowserve carved out plenty of chances, notably midway through the half when Kyle Dixon’s corner from the left was headed firmly by Danny Meadows who saw his effort tipped over the top by visiting custodian Brandon Ganley. From the retake Jack Beckett won the header but missed the target.

By then the Birmingham side had the lead, with Jordan Nadat first to the rebound after Joe Searson had parried his initial attempt, and it was a lead they maintained until the interval.

The second half saw the introduction of Flowserve’s latest signing Rodrigo Goncalves, brought in on loan from Grantham Town, and the nippy winger was soon in action when he narrowly headed over after being found in the box by Meadows.

He then showed the right-back a clean pair of heels before his cross was deflected into the arms of the keeper, but that man Colbourne was to double the visitors’ lead a couple of minutes later when he turned the ball home from close range.

Flowserve’s best chance came in the 72nd minute when Meadows crossed from the right only for the ball to just elude the forehead of Hutchinson. It was that sort of day for the men in orange.

Newark Flowserve: 1 Joe Searson; 2 James Craig (Jahren Barrow 74mins); 3 Jack Andrews (Elliot King 64mins); 4 Tom Potts (captain); 5 Mitch Robinson; 6 Jack Beckett; 7 Danny Meadows; 8 Kyle Dixon; 9 Ben Hutchinson; 10 James Turner; 11 Keylun Pollard (Rodrigo Goncalves HT).

Attendance: 287.
