GB stars attend Junior Parkrun

Local youngsters, visitors from Whitley Bay and Falmouth and GB stars

Max Litchfield (team GB swimmer) and Esme Burge (England hockey) attended today’s Newark junior parkrun, a free 2k community event that takes place every Sunday atSconce & Devon Park, Newark, and is open to 4-14 year-olds and their families.

Max & Esme will be two of around 250 National Lottery funded athletes who are attending a parkrun event between 18 August and 9 September as part of #teamparkrun, an initiative that invites Britain’s top athletes to volunteer at parkruns and junior parkruns across the country. Each of parkrun’s 800 events across the UK has volunteers who provide support and encouragement to runners, joggers and walkers, as well as ensuring that nobody finishes last at a parkrun by taking up the role of Tail Walker.

#teamparkrun is backed by Sport England, Sport Scotland, Sport Wales, Sport Northern Ireland, the British Olympic Association and British Paralympic Association, along with a number of national governing bodies.

Claire Simmonds, Run Director at Newark junior parkrun, told Radio Newark Sport: “We are delighted to welcome Max and Esme to Newark junior parkrun. #teamparkrun provides a fantastic opportunity to demonstrate how inclusive parkruns are and how warmly we welcome walkers, joggers and runners of all abilities. parkrun is a socially-focussed event which is all about encouraging the local community to get out in the fresh air and to enjoy our open spaces. I am certain that Max and Esme will both be a huge inspiration to our juniors, whether they are regular parkrunners or joining the Newark junior parkrun family for the very first time. And who knows…. maybe we have some future Team GB athletes in amongst us! ”

Younsters from as far afield as Whitley Bay and Falmouth joined the locals on a cold and dull August morning.
