All the Newark Striders news

Last week was dominated by the Gordon Whelbourn series and a big well done to run leader Tom Marshall who won all 5 races and lifted the Dr Simeon Hansard trophy.

18 Newark Striders completed the entire series, comprising of 5K races Monday to Thursday plus a 10K race on Friday. Jan Bailey placed 2nd in each event, 2nd overall and 1st in age category, completing the 30K in 1:46:20. Each day seemed to bring a new PB for Simon Roberts who crossed the line in as high as 6th place in the individual events, finishing 6th overall in 1:53:41. Simon Palmer wasn’t far behind, he came 8th overall with an aggregate time of 2:00:03. It was nip and tuck between Mark Turner and Nick Beveridge all week, Nick’s eventual time was 2:11:03 and Mark 2:12:08. Jess Gordon and Peter Davis both won first place in their age category, not only for the series as a whole but also in the Friday 10K, which is an event in its own right, total time 2:13:46 for Jess who was also 3rd lady, 2:14:39 for Peter. Next came Noel Henderson 2:22:03, Graham Welsh 2:23:24, Philippa Clarke 2:24:56 5th lady, Steve Padgett 2:25:03, Sara Carter 2:29:33 9th lady, Dan Endersby 2:30:44, Dan Arkwell 2:44:08, Jason Priest 2:49:36, Ruth Mountstevens 2:56:04, Zoe Troop 3:07:18, Nicole Henderson 3:09:22.

A further 36 Newark Striders raced on up to four of the evenings, adding up to over 1000 KM and there was a fantastic turnout each night, with members also coming along to give welcome support.. 

On Saturday Lewis Hopkinson took part in the van ‘Elnor Trail 10K in Lincolnshire and completed the course in 39:46, finishing in second place. 

Moving on to Sunday and 8 Striders were at Clumber Park for the Run2U 10K Trail race. Jan Bailey finished second overall in a time of 35:53. Steve Padgett was next Strider home in a time of 52:12 followed by Sara Carter 53:23, Stephen Tomlinson 54:21, Bev Hancock 54:43, Nicki Padgett 55:55, Jason Priest 56:45 and Ruth Mountstevens 1:00:40. Steve Martin was also in 10K action, this time in Hull, where he crossed the finishing line in 45:32. 

Mary Swindles was in Yorkshire competing in the Leeds Sprint Triathlon, coming first in her age category and completing the event in 2:08:41. Finally news from Staffordshire where Stacey Atkins was taking on the Half Ironman event, which she completed in 7:24:01, knocking 39 minutes off last year’s time earning a new PB.
