Newark Rugby Club

Richard Staniforth reports

A extremely tight game saw Newark Rugby Clubs under 14s enter the last 40 seconds of the NLD Semi Final trailing 10-12.

But then Scunthorpe conceded a penalty in the front of their posts on their 22 and Ben T calmly slotted the penalty kick over to start big celebrations by his team mates as the referee then blew the final whistle.

This was a game where we didn't play our best rugby, but the 100% commitment shown by the boys saw them home - just.

Newark started strongly and eventually after some strong direct runs which took us to within 5metres, scrum half Will S was able to power over from the base of a ruck. The try was converted and we looked to be in control of the game.

Scunthorpe then hit back with some strong play and eventually deservedly levelled after some strong running by both their forwards and powerful backs.

Newark now started to concede a lot of unnecessary penalties to lose territory gained and poor handling saw a number of promising moves end frustratingly.

Turning round 7-7 at half time Scunthorpe began to dominate possession and territory. More unnecessary penalties were conceded and tackles were missed. Eventually Scunthorpe's strong running right wing cut through our defence and put his team mate into the corner. The conversion was missed, which was to prove crucial.

Scunthorpe continued to apply the pressure and we were playing most of our rugby in our own half. Eventually after a couple of strong runs we found ourselves in their 22. A penalty was then awarded to Newark and Ben T stepped forward to knock over the penalty. 10 mins to go and it couldn't have been closer.

As the minutes ticked by both sides came close to scoring but eventually the crucial penalty with 40 seconds to go proved to be the difference between the sides.

Well done to the Newark boys for hanging in there when things weren't going right and to Scunthorpe who played with a lot of passion, power and skill and must feel very disappointed to lose in the way they did right at the death.
