Newark Tennis Club

A busy weekend

It was another busy weekend for Newark Tennis Club and on the hottest afternoon of the year the Mixed 1st hosted the local derby against Caunton A. The matches were mostly even with a very high standard of tennis from both sides and every game counted. There was a series of tie-break throughout the day, Sam Smith/Sara Jackson were able to convert and took 4 of their 6 sets whilst Ashley Hallam/Sue Bilton lost 2 tie-beaks against Caunton 1st pair but later took two 6-0 games against Caunton's 3rd pair giving them 2 sets to 4. James Lalyk/Steph Smith took 2 sets from their games, one from Caunton 1st & one from their 3rd pairs. Caunton A came away with the win 10-8 giving the team their first defeat in over a year.

Sara, Steph & Sue were all in action again on Sunday as they headed to David Lloyd West Bridgford and it's fair to say that after a year back in Div 2 in summer 2018, they had forgotten how challenging Div 1 could be. Sara with her returning Partner Sue Tomblin started strong but after going 4-1 up against DL WB 1st, suffered a defeat in a tie-break after which they struggled to convert their winning points to games & sets, Steph Smith/Annie Davies fared better with games but were unable to get enough to take any sets. It was 2nd couple Sue Bilton/Jane Hendley that took Newark's only set from winning a tie-break in the final game of the day.
