Regis moves up a gear
Just two months after making his professional debut, Newark’s Regis ‘The First’ Sugden will be moving up a gear when he boxes again on Saturday 18 May.
Featuring on the card of The REAL Prospects at Bingham Leisure Centre, the Suggy’s Gym 23-year old will be looking to add a second victory to his record in a six-round Welterweight contest with MJ Hall from Brierley Hill in the West Midlands.
“We were originally looking for another four-rounder for this one but there were no takers,” said Sugden. “MJ isn’t my ideal opponent as I really wanted to test myself against someone with more wins to his name. But, given that he’s a southpaw, it’s still going to be an interesting one and I’m relishing the chance to see if I can beat him in better style than more experienced boxers before me have done.
“I’m keen to build on my debut and show the local crowd I can bring something else to the party in Bingham. I’m not hanging around – I want to be boxing for a Midlands title sooner rather than later so getting a six-rounder under my belt will stand me in good stead. ”
Promoted by Scott Calow Boxing in association with Suggy’s Gym, the talent-stacked evening at The Banks will showcase some of Nottinghamshire’s best boxing prospects. The card also featuresunbeaten Welterweight Sajid Abdil from Derby, with whom Sugden has been sparring during his training camp, and a Lightweight rematch between local boxer Nathan Kirk and Dean Evans billed as ‘Revenge or Repeat?’ after Evans stopped Kirk the last time out.
Completing the line-up of home boxers are Ryan Amos, Paul Thompson, Delmar Thomas, SamSpooner and Sebastian Slusarczyk, the unbeaten big hitter who faces Chad Sugden for the vacant Midlands Light Heavyweight title at Nottingham’s Harvey Hadden Stadium on Saturday 6 July.
“Regis is buzzing to be boxing so close to Newark, giving all his followers the opportunity to come out and support him again,” said Suggy’s Gym head coach Dean Sugden. “It’s going to be a great night all round, not least because everyone will have the chance to see Chad’s next opponent in action too.
“Tickets are £40 for standard seating and £55 for VIP Ringside with VIP bar but they’re flying out of the door. So anyone still wanting to be there on the night needs to get in touch with Regis or call the ticket hotline on 01636 605708 or 07816 840920 as soon as possible.
“Doors open at 6pm with the first bell at 7.15pm and although the venue is only 15 minutes up the road from Newark transport can be arranged on a first come, first served basis.”
