Silver for Barnby Road

County Handball finals

Twelve year 4 children from Barnby Road Academy finished as runners up in the Nottinghamshire Schools’ handball finals last Friday. The team was representing Newark and Sherwood District, having qualified from the regional event earlier in the year. There were eight schools involved, representing the different districts of Nottinghamshire. Matches were played in two halves, girls playing the first half followed by boys in the second. Final scores were a total of both halves put together.

Barnby’s afternoon started slowly, losing to Southwark School from Basford, but improving performances in the group stages saw them qualify for a quarter final against Greenwood school from Nottingham. This match, and the semi-final against Arnold Hill, were very one-sided with Barnby winning comfortably before being rematched against Southwark in the final. The final was a much closer game than the earlier match, but Southwark were still too strong, eventually winning 10-5. The children had a great afternoon and played exceptionally well.

Handball is a fast-moving and great fun sport at primary school level. Hopefully more children will get involved next year with matches arranged between local schools.
